Gaming Briefs wearing Boxers January 2, 2026
Oh Holy Sh… night. I had to wait until after the new year to catch up on things, but DAMN did a lot happen.
The
biggest story is OF course the Ubisoft Breach, it’s still ongoing so I don’t
know the entire scope of what happened, how much damage was done, but Jesus
this was pretty damn big for them.
Initial
reports that allegedly, 4 separate groups attacked Ubisoft in tandem. On top of
one group granted (as of reporting) $13 million (equivalent) in Rainbow Six
currency, a second group accessed servers and banned as many players as
possible, a third group claiming they had taken internal and client data,
threatening to release it (Ubisoft seems to have confirmed this wasn’t customer
personal data) and a fourth group group
claiming to have had access to 900gb of data (including dev tools and source
code to who the hell knows how many games)
As more
of this story comes out, it’s hard to tell entirely what the full truth is, as
reportedly (thanks to The CyberSec Guru) some groups may be lying, or grossly
exaggerating things, though the “Robin
Hoods” (as they’re being called) dumping all that currency and ruining the
Rainbow Six economy so bad Ubisoft completely shut the game down and rolling
the servers back.
As of writing,
R6S Is still down.
With how big this story is developing, I don’t think I can fully do this story any justice, so please go over to The Cybersec Guru for more in-depth coverage.
The Cyber Sec Guru's ongoing coverage
Katsuhiro Harada officially left Bandai Namco on December 31st, after
previously announcing his retirement a few weeks ago, Harada san will be missed
by all Tekken fans. I’ll always remember that time he was all in about learning
about Waffle House and why that should’ve been a Tekken stage.
In
other retirement news, freelance Illustrator, designer, and game story writer Soraya Saga
has announced her retirement, cited family circumstances.
She is known for her work in some of the greatest
JRPGs including scenario writer and co-creator of Xenogears (With her husband, Tetsuya
Takahashi), Xenosaga, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and the character writing for characters
such as Sabin and Edgar in FFVI.
In toy related news, Playmates has not had its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license renewed, which is Huge because the company has had an uninterrupted license since the 1980’s. Not so cowabunga for them.
Somehow, in MORE retirement news
Limited Run Games co-founder and CEO, Josh Fairhurst announced that he will be
stepping away from the company, and has already stepped away from his CEO
position back in September, and will continue to act as president until this
coming March.
Having bought several LRG games myself (Shantae games, TMNT Shredders Revenge, Blaster Master Zero, and more) and having been familiar with the company, from seeing their opportunities to have physical versions of games that probably wouldn’t get them without this company, to all the problems that came with so many of their releases over the last couple of years (Holy shit the inexcusable state of their Sonic Generations CE that they delayed SPECIFICALLY to “ensure quality”) I have to wonder what direction this will mean for the company going forward.
Full Story, thanks to Time Extension.
That’s
all I have for today as I try to catch up on everything. Stay Frosty.
